Jumbo #51 was published in May, 1943 just 18 months after Pearl Harbor was attacked and the U.S. entered World War II. The country was deeply imbedded in a life and death conflict and comic books of the time frequently reflected the anxiety and awesome terror of the times. Sheena stories were no exception. In this story, some Nazi soldiers are looking for some secret ammunition storage sites in the jungles of Africa. They fly into and land in Sheena's domain. However their first encounter is not with Sheena but an African wannabe queen whom they manage to enlist in their nefarious schemes. For her cooperation, they promise her she will become queen of her tribe and they bribe her by offering her a cache' of modern warfare weapons which will make her more powerful than any of her enemies. She signs on, and in so doing she becomes Sheena's deadly enemy. She orders her tribesmen to grab Sheena and toss her into a Lion's Den, which they do, but Sheena manages to survive (as she always does). Sheena returns to the fight, and somehow manages to crash the Nazi's single engine plane into the wicked queen's village killing the two German soldiers and the wicked queen in the process. Pics below show Sheena grabbed, held, and tossed into the pit with the lions. As I've said before, if Sheena had entered the Miss Universe contest in her day, she would surely have been a shoo-in to win . . . she's a perfect 10. More fun for all of us.
