Hypothetical question: could Sleepycomics.com fund my life?

Aug 25, 2012 08:43 AM
Update: Hey everyone! My art for this week is ready! Managed to finish it tonight. It took longer than I expected, because I have two panels in it. Vampirella is the subject this week. It's a pretty good piece, with chloroform and bondage in it. You'll like it!

Today's post is about a pretty sensitive subject, but I'll try to approach it in the best way possible. In a previous post, I talked about how I really have two jobs: my full-time corporate job and running Sleepycomics.com. This corporate job is, for lack of a better word, a waste of my precious time. I don't provide any value to society, and it is slowly draining away my short time on this Earth.

Sleepycomics.com however, provides a tangible benefit to society...albeit, a very small segment of society. It provides a source of information and content that used to be really hard to find.

I believe there is potential in making Sleepycomics.com even better. The only thing I don't have, is time. I spend 9 hours every day at work. That's 9 hours of my life that is not spent producing original content, finding content and improving the site.

So why don't I just quit my job? Because I am a human being! I am a citizen of the United States, just like a lot of you. I have to pay rent, health insurance and taxes, just like a lot of you. I will die one day, just like everyone else.

With that said, let's do some interesting math. Once you see the numbers, you'll understand where I am coming from.

  • Sleepycomics.com gets about 27,000 unique visitors a month. That's 27,000 different people.

  • About 1,500-1,700 individuals visit the site regularly.

  • The median income in the United States is about $44,000. Let's be conservative, and say I need $36,000 a year (I live very frugally).

  • In order to generate $3,000 a month, 1,000 Sleepycomics.com fans would have to pay $3 a month.

I know there's more than 1,000 people in the world who value this site. The question then is, is Sleepycomics.com worth $3 a month? That's like purchasing three 99 cent drawings a month.

It can be a tough question, and I can understand any apprehension. Money is very tight these days. I just want to assure you that there is no way I will ever get rich off this. It's frankly impossible. In the best case scenario, I would be living as part of America's lower income class. And honestly? I am okay with that. I love working on this site very much.

And I also want to assure you that I am not turning Sleepycomics.com into a pay site. It's illegal anyway (copyright issues).

I just wanted to open the question up for discussion.

I am a human being. I will die one day. How much is Sleepycomics.com worth to you?

In the meantime though, nothing is changing. I will continue running the site like usual. New art should be for sale shortly.

E-mail me at [email protected] if you have thoughts and questions!

Thank you!

I would support you with 3 dollars a month. Or more.

But don't forget that you may lose interest or get married (expensive),have children (even more expensive)etc.

You don't know what is around the corner and as you get older you realise you ought to save for a pension.

Think carefully about this one... if you really want to do for it, perhaps get a part time job so that some definate funds are still coming in.

Good luck.

@Xenaphon Thanks for your thoughts! I think about this all the time, and I weigh the pros and cons. I have a lot of savings, which could support me for a few years.

It also doesn't rule out the possibility that I return to full time work after a few years doing Sleepycomics.com.

Starting a family has never been on my radar either. This is why I am in such a unique position!

Would rather pay $3 a month here than on a $20 commission on DA.

@musdy Agreed! I think the quality of the art that you get makes it an amazing deal.

@warhorse You have a point. I shouldn't let this site take over my life.

@Red I make sure to balance my fun sleepy fetish with other things -- I love to read
Lovecraftian fiction, watch TV comedies like "Big Bang Theory" and "Modern Family", pal around with friends and family, etc. Plus, I enjoy my work and colleagues at the library. I can do that, and still manage to crank out quite a number of "superheroine-in-KO-peril" pics every week.

Even so, sometimes I decide to "pull back" on one hobby or interest, to focus on another, or just get more rest. You can use one hobby as a break from the other!

Of course, I do sometimes, like you, wonder how much better I could get if I had more time to spend drawing my heroines, perhaps having money and time to take an art class, etc. I would also dearly love to have a lot more money to spend on commissioned artwork. The "lottery ticket route" hasn't worked out for me just yet, though... Ha!

Now, if you do decide to go through with this bold venture, you can count me in for $3 or more per month!

And, as for the people warning you that somewhere down the line you might want to get married and have children -- this is one 51-year-old man who has never regretted staying single! And I like kids, always have; I've just never had the desire to own one!

@gytalf2000 yeah, even with my current schedule, I can still crank out new scenes and art. Maybe the best solution is to just keep doing what I'm doing now. It's the best of both worlds.

@Red You said you had a full-time job. Do you have the option of part-time work in your field?

@gytalf2000 it's possible, but I don't see it often. Part time work would definitely allow me to live more comfortably.

Right now it's speculation. Lots of people make a living online. Some even do it making comics! So what I am proposing is not unusual.

@Red No, it certainly is not unusual nowadays, that's for sure.

And what I was saying about balancing out interests and hobbies wasn't meant to deter you in any way. I hope that you can make this work out!

Maybe allowing some adverts onto the site would generate some income in case you do go full time. As long as the site isn't plastered with them - there are few things worse than a website with adverts flashing at you all the time!

@Xenaphon I'm against ads. I don't think they belong here. And they wouldn't make much anyway because people would avoid them.

The store is actually a really good idea.
